USING THE CONTROL PANEL

8 September 2008 - Submitted by SRBACE

Here we will go over multiple ways to use the control panel

  • The control panel is located in your start menu. By clicking on this you will open up many options. It allows you to control the accessibility and how your computer is used and set up.
  • The most common of these is the add and remove programs icon. This will help you install and remove the many programs you use and try.  One thing you must remember when uninstalling programs is that just uninstalling them still leaves traces in the registry, This will slow your computer over time and should be cleaned with a registry cleaner, Tampering with the registry can cause system failure so if you are not sure what you are doing please find help with this task.
  • The second most used icon is the Administrative tools, This I will save for another article.
  • So moving on from there we have the mouse tools. This allows you to change cursers  and mouse trails clicking speed and change the buttons from left handed to right handed. There are also some cosmetic changes you can make to your pointer and hour glass.
  • Another of the common used icons is the User accounts, this depending on your operating system can help you create change and password protects your different accounts. If you are using a professional version of Microsoft you can also change the type of account from basic user to power user all the way to administrator. This can be a good option if you have children using your pc. It can be used to control the programs and install options they are allowed to use.
  • In this folder you also have your automatic update settings. You can set when and how your computer receives its updates. For instance you might want to have it download at night so it doesn’t interfere with your normal internet and computer usage or if you are using dial up you will want to get your update manually as this will take much much longer to do.
  • This is also where you will find your network settings and wireless wizard, these you can use to set up your internet connection or your home network. If you are not familiar with these options please find assistance in setting them up as this can get very complex at times even with Microsoft trying to make them more user friendly.
